blue_carHanding the car keys to your son or daughter for the first time is a landmark family moment. Most parents enter that moment with a mix of pride, sadness, and fear. Sadness and pride come from the realization that your child is not far from being all grown up. But the fear comes from somewhere else.

The fact is driving can be dangerous, especially for teens. Inexperienced drivers  make mistakes and those mistakes can have big consequences. Before you hand over those keys, you need to be confident that your teen has all the tools and knowledge to be as safe as possible.

A great way to start off on the right foot is to have a written agreement that is signed before the car leaves the driveway – setting the expectations clearly before an issue arises.

By signing the contract, your teen agrees to:

  • Obey speed limits
  • Drive responsibly
  • Never use a mobile phone while driving
  • Never drink and drive
  • Always put safety first
  • Obey curfew
  • Get good grades

Download our sample Safe Teen Driver Agreement and make sure that landmark moment sets the right tone and expectation for the responsibility and privilege of driving.
