History
Dan Gibson founded Gibson Insurance Agency in Plymouth, Indiana in 1933 during the depth of the Great Depression. Most banks had shut their doors and there was little money available, making it a very challenging time to start a new business. With a strong commitment to serve his customers and employees, the Gibson name quickly became synonymous with insurance.
In 1970, Dan’s son, Dave Gibson, joined the agency. Enthusiastic to grow the company with the same strong character of his father, plans immediately began for construction of a new building that, to this day, bears the Gibson name.
Ahead of his time and determined to maintain the company’s momentum, Dave recognized that employees who feel a sense of ownership and have a vested interest in the success of the company produce greater results. For that reason, the first employee shareholder was announced in 1978.
After many strategic decisions, that included opening an office in South Bend and the acquisition of Taylor Moyer Agency, Dave continued to steer the advancements, growth, and perpetuation of the company. As Dave eased his way into retirement, the reigns were passed onto Greg Downes, a community advocate and forward-thinking leader. Greg became President of the firm in 2000, added the role of Chief Executive Officer in 2005, and became Chairman of the Board in 2008.
In 2007, Greg was responsible for the opening of Gibson’s Indianapolis office. The firm prospered under his leadership and strategic direction as a leading provider of risk management products and services with a strong commitment to clients, employees, and the communities it served.
The perpetuation of leadership continued in 2009 as Tim Leman was named President. Tim joined the firm in 2005 as the Director of Employee Benefits. He was named a stockholder, Chief Growth Officer, and joined the Executive Leadership Team in 2007.
Today marks a fresh new era for Gibson Insurance Group. Tim has a simple and direct approach for the firm, focusing on core fundamentals, an optimistic attitude, and already beginning to leave his mark by uniting the firm with a common value proposition. Greg remains a foundational force within the agency as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board.
